Year 7: Students are placed into groups according to their ability

All students follow the programme of study designed by CIMT (the Centre for Innovation in Maths Teaching):

Year 8: Students are placed into groups according to their ability

Year 9: Students are placed into groups according to their ability

At key Stage 3 we build upon the students experiences of numeracy at primary school and prepare them for the GCSE course.  We cover the four main strands of Maths as set out in the National Curriculum (Number, Algebra, Statistics and Geometry) and teach them both as overt skills and embedded into project work using themes such as planning a backpacking trip and Outer Space.

We set all of our maths students according to their ability and deliver the syllabus at the pace, and with the support most appropriate to each class. This way we help our students to grow in confidence and know that they “can do maths”, whatever level they start at.

We assess each student every half term to check that they are making progress and have a range of intervention strategies including 1-1 or small group tuition available should students need extra support. The skills required for GCSE mathematics are emphasised throughout the year.
